This piece of work combines my main areas of interest in music and embroidery. While I admire the original album cover painted by Sam McKinniss, I’ve been wanting to create my interpretation of it.
I’ve been researching embroidery sampling, and I thought this would be an exciting way to document and convey the meaning of individual songs and the album as a cohesive whole.
I hand-stitched separate pieces for each song that I then digitally transferred onto a denim background to experiment with the layout. I chose denim as the primary background to reflect the 'blue' emotional tone of the album. The material also grounds the work in a casual setting that correlates with the album’s narrative of a house party. This choice helped create a discourse between a high-concept emotional 'melodrama' and the tactile, practical nature of domestic textiles.
The final outcomes include a 12” vinyl cover and a 5” lyric booklet. The shark was made using a combination of embroidery, couching, and felting, while the remaining pieces were primarily constructed with backstitching.
